Zyn Icy Blackcurrant Review

Written by Snusmeister

Rugged pouches stick well

Nuanced flavor for lighter flavor preferences

Solid brand globally known

I am back at it again!

Nicotine Warehouse told me that I should review Zyn Icy Blackcurrant, almost as if I don’t know my Zyns. At 12.5mg, they told me it packed a bit of a punch - like I have not sat in my house with 150mg from time to time. Anyway, as one of the extended team, I always like to give my true and impartial opinion for the snus lovers out there. So stick with me, ill guide you through the experience.

Unboxing Zyn Icy Blackcurrant

For such a powerhouse of a commercial brand, the unboxing experience of Zyn is particularly underwhelming. I am not sure what it is about Zyn but there is just a lack of excitement when it comes to the look. Maybe it is the white packaging, with an almost pharmaceutical imposed logo, I am not sure. But, the packaging itself is never exciting and the FDA approval the brand has now obtained in the States is probably going to make the packaging even less exciting.

Now some of you may well be questioning, why is this guy so caught up on the packaging. For me, nicotine pouches, or snus for those in the know, are a pretty desirable product. Most desirable products have a coercive element about them. Like “I shouldn’t be doing this, but hmmmm” For me, Zyn just doesn’t have that appeal. Regardless of the pretty swirl of pouches in the can, the Icy Blackcurrant just doesn’t do enough to excite me.

The Flavor

Based on the name of the product I should expect a blackcurrant flavor with a tint of mint coming through. Icy and fruit usually means a mint and fruit infusion. Some brands lean more toward the depth of flavor from the fruit, and some, toward the mint, with the fruit being more nuanced. Zyn Icy Blackcurrant managed to lack on both sides of the fence, in my opinion.

The combination of the two flavors somehow manages to negate one another. Such is the lack of flavor, I found myself licking the pouch in an attempt to extract taste from the pouch. The blackcurrant is somewhat present after the first thirty seconds or so, but then dissipates badly. The mint does catch the back of the throat as these pouches force a unpleasant drip. In short, most of the flavor is caught in the drip from the mint. And drips cause you to cough through the acidity. Overall, the flavor is not what I would come to expect from such a huge company.

The pouches, although a little rougher than most brands, do attach really well between the gum and upper lip. Some may say that is a given, but I assure you it is not. Some can be extremely dry and take a while to get into position that holds for relaxation. The Icy Blackcurrant do well to attach into place quickly. If there was one negative, it would be that the pouches flatten out quickly, meaning sometimes it can be uncomfortable at longer usage. I am used to loading pouches for 30 - 45 minutes at a time. But, with the Zyn pouches, I am yet to get past 20 minutes without having to throw it in the trash.

Strength of Zyn Icy Blackcurrant

12.5mg is not a particularly strong level for nicotine pouches, on the whole. But, these pouches can give you a slight kick that is recognisable. It is by no means the upper echelons of pouch strength but it does enough to let you know it is there. Against other pouches punching in the same nicotine weight class, I think the Icy Blackcurrant is let down by its flavor. Flavor does impact heavily on the perceived strength. That is why the mints always seem to hit that much harder, with the menthol kick combined.

The strength does well to alert you for a short period of time, but it is not sustained through a longer load. You do find that typically the lower mg nicotine pouches have a shorter lifespan actually in the gum than higher. But, with Zyn, I think the combination of poor flavoring and pouch longevity directly impacts on the perceived strength. That being said, if you are looking for a pouch for a quick lunch time kick before going back into the office, the Icy Blackcurrant do enough.

Overall Performance

If you are looking for a pouch to give you a quick kick of nicotine then these do what they say on the tin. In terms of overall experience, factoring in flavor and longevity, these pouches underwhelm. The enjoyment of nicotine pouches is subjective at the best of times but I found the Icy Blackcurrant divisive. I can see why much of America likes Zyn, and to some extent they would be perfect on the go. The quick burst of nicotine does well to satisfy a craving. But, if you are like me, looking more for a sit in the tub and stare into thin air: These will irritate you more than relax you.
