Strong pouches (on paper)

Good mint flavor that packs a nice balanced release

 

I am back at it again!

 

In 2017 I knew the Garant of before, Grant. I am not entirely sure what happened with the brand but it seems there must have been rights issues. Interestingly Grant is still available in the EU in various countries. When Nicotine Warehouse sent me my regular package with cans to review, I have to admit I was a little unsure about Garant. The Garant Extreme is the leader of the pack, with subsidiary flavors still in the same Extreme line. Why a brand would choose to use the name Extreme as a flavor, then subsequent flavors also called Extreme X, or Extreme Y, is beyond me but hey. It could be argued that the difference is “Edition” added to the further flavors, but I am still a little confused.

 

Unboxing Garant Extreme 
 

I try not to be too harsh on some of the packaging I receive but it can be difficult for me. If I was any less judgemental then I guess I would struggle to keep a job. So, whether it hurts peoples feelings or not is beyond the point, I try to be objective. And Garant, the packaging is not great. The logo looks like it was made on Canva by a failed dropshipper, and the Extreme banner, don’t get me started. Why you would try to make something you put in your mouth look like it is not supposed to be in there is beyond me. I understand the ethos behind the somewhat plausible concept (for a 10 year old), but the packaging actually negates the desire to buy a can.

 

Needless to say, I was unimpressed with the way that Garant is presented to the user. It does seem a shame as the former product, Grant, had a certain air of professionalism about it that I liked.

 

The Flavor
 

The Extreme flavor from Garant fails to really explain to the user what the flavor actually is. Having a little experience in pouches (wink) helps to come to the understanding it would be a mint flavor. But, for a new user, especially someone new to pouches, there is no way they would know what they were buying.

 

Enough of me complaining about the presentation. The flavor was mint, and did have some good qualities. I thought the presentation on first load was well received. The pouches tend not to explode with flavor, as some brands do; instead the flavor was equally dispersed throughout my first 30 minutes, which impressed me. The imaging of flavor did more for me than I thought the brand could do (based on the presentation) - I could taste mint all over. In fact, I would go as far as to say that these pouches really do make you feel like you are chewing on a Polo.

 

Kudos to Garant for the flavor release. Although it is not a super deep or rich mint, it is well balanced and holds longevity.

 

Garant Extreme Pouches
 

I usually like dry pouches, and by my estimation, these are dry pouches. I did think the composition felt quite cheap in comparison to other brands. So, on one hand the flavor is consistent, but the pouch quality makes me think the flavor could pop more. Moreover , dry pouches do have the irritating potential to split meaning you have a can full, or even worse, a mouthful, of powder. But, despite Garant Extreme being dry, there was no sign, or feel, that the pouches were at risk of splitting. That does, however, confirm to me that perhaps a cheaper grade of pouch lining is used. So, although dry, they are thick and do not allow as much flavor (or strength which we will discuss) to exude from the pouches. Overall, the Extreme Garant were okay to use, although on first load I found them to be quite uncomfortable until they moistened.

 

Strength of Garant Extreme 50mg
 

At 50mg, you would expect the Extreme to hit quite hard - at least that is what the packaging would suggest. Truth is, they do, in the strangest and most unbalanced way I have experienced over my twenty years using pouches. These pouches reminded me of the old Odens, which were thick pouches of snus from the mid 2000’s. Odens would be so inconsistent, which typically you would find from products deriving from tobacco using natural nicotine. I knew to expect it from snus, it was dependent on shelf life, age, and containment. I have not expected that from nicotine pouches. The Garant Extreme hit differently from virtually every pouch I tried. One would knock my socks off to the point of having to sit down for ten minutes. Then, another, I would be waiting for the hit to come like an alcoholic for the off license.

 

I would love to speculate on the inconsistency, and perhaps, I even should. But, the truth is, I am not a manufacturer and I am not present at the process of creating nicotine pouches. For the big hitting Extremes, we had a good time, but for the light ones - I feel robbed.

 

Overall Performance
 

It is difficult to really attain a true reflection of Garant Extreme in the strength department. And yes, I did order another can just to be sure. But the strength levels are all over the place. The balancing of nicotine is definitely something that I am not a fan of. I like low, strong and extremely strong pouches depending on my mood. And, if a brand is unable to accurately place a strength it is difficult to be relied upon. That being said, I thought the flavoring was well balanced, although nuanced at times. I am looking forward to another flavor rollercoaster from Garant with the rest of the the Extreme line, but for the flagship original, it is a miss from me.
